Obituary for Charles E. Ballard

Charles E. “Chuck” Ballard, age 81 of Shullsburg, WI passed away on Friday, June 5, 2020 at his home in Shullsburg. He was born July 23, 1938 in Hazel Green, WI the son of Henrietta Ballard. Chuck was born in Hazel Green and grew up in rural Shullsburg. After 8th grade, Chuck worked for various farmers and white washing for Dallmer Doogan. After Chuck met the love of his life, Karen Bennett they moved to Whitewater, WI. They were united in marriage on April 2, 1960 at United Methodist Church in Darlington, WI. After their marriage, they moved to Monroe, WI where they started their family. They finally settled in Shullsburg where they raised their family and lived the rest of their lives.

Chuck is survived by his wife Karen at home; one daughter: Tina (Bill) Hocking of Platteville, two grandchildren: Christopher (Erryn) Hocking of Shullsburg and Shawn (Jessica) Hocking of Belmont, WI; two great-grandchildren: Charles Hocking and Zoe Sams; one brother: Carl (Linda) Ballard of Shullsburg; a brother-in-law: Dale Bennett of Cuba City, WI and two sisters-in-law: Mary Knobbe of Elgin, IL and Gloria Spore of Shullsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law: Jim Bennett, Charlie Bennett, Melvin Bennett, Elmer Knobbe, and Orval Spore; and two sisters-in-law: Evelyn Bennett and Diane Bennett.

Chuck was a man who loved cars and loved to work on Fords or anything with a motor. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting in his younger years, and would always enjoy a cold beer. Chuck spent a lot of time camping at Lake Joy, and attending stock car races and Demolition Derbies at the fair. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends.

Private services will be held for Chuck at a later date. The Erickson Funeral Home in Shullsburg is serving the family. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.ericksonfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Chuck’s name.

The family would like to thank the staff at Upland Hills Hospice in Dodgeville for their excellent care and compassion during this difficult time.
