Obituary

Brenda Lea Johnston, age 67, of Potosi, Wisconsin, formerly of Darlington, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2026, at Southwest Health in Platteville. She was born on April 4, 1959, in Monroe, Wisconsin, Brenda was the daughter of Roger and Marian (Davis) Monson. She grew up in Darlington and graduated from Darlington High School with the class of 1977. She later attended Southwest Tech in Fennimore and spent many years working at 3M in Prairie Du Chein, where she was respected for her strong work ethic and reliability.

Brenda found love and companionship with Michael Johnston, and the two were united in marriage on January 13, 2012, in Waukon, Iowa. Together they made their home in Potosi overlooking the Mississippi River.

Brenda was a woman who truly enjoyed being around people. She loved to socialize, tell stories, and share laughs with family, friends and coworkers . She had a way of making everyone feel welcome and rarely met a stranger. Whether it was camping, fishing, or simply sitting around a fire visiting, Brenda found joy in spending time with her nose in a book and crocheting. Her greatest pride was her family, especially her boys and her grandchildren. Brenda made sure they always knew how much she loved them and how proud she was of each of them.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Michael Johnston at home; her sons, David Yeazle of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Nathan (Erin) Yeazle of Darlington, Wisconsin; her step-sons, Michael Johnston of Harpers Ferry, Iowa, and Nicholas Johnston of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; her grandchildren, Rumer, Beatriz, Kira, William, Arianna, and Natalie; her sister, Debra Monson of LaValle, Wisconsin; and her mother-in-law, Rita Nye of Moyie Springs, Idaho and many nieces, nephews and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roger and Marian Monson; her father-in-law, James Johnston; and her grandniece, Addalynn.

A funeral service will be held Monday, April 27, 2026, at 1:00 P.M. at Erickson Funeral Home (508 Main St., Darlington) with Rev. Nick McElrath of First Baptist Church in Darlington officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery in Darlington. A visitation will be held Monday, April 27, 2026, from 11:00 A.M. until the time of services at the funeral home. Brenda always had that sweetness in her, the kind of sweetness that made others feel comfort by her. Easy to chat with and interesting to listen to. I will miss her as I do her parents, it is an honor to be a part of such a wonderful persons life. Thank you Brenda so much for that and your beautiful family.

The news about Brenda breaks my heart. The strange thing is that I was cast last minute earlier this month as a replacement in a country western musical theater play (which opened last weekend) as the mother of two grown sons. "Mom" doesn’t have a name in the script, so I called her “Brenda” in honor of our classmate. Brenda was a most creative friend in our childhood years, and we spent many happy times together dressing up and staging our goofy antics. We'd been penpals since reconnecting on Facebook in 2009 and shared many book notes and philosophical thoughts. It’s poignant that the show I'm doing was just one day short of getting through opening weekend with more time to focus on personal life when we got the news, and I just missed telling Brenda she’s my character’s namesake. But she's always present in my thoughts.
