Carol Jean Schaber, age 79, slipped her earthly bonds on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at Badger Prairie Health Care Center in Verona, WI.Carol was born on July 27, 1941 to Wallace and Lucille (Skattum) Schaber in Monroe, WI. She grew up in Darlington. She graduated from Darlington High School and then graduated from Madison Business College. She moved to San Francisco, California, where she enjoyed many years of successful employment and made many, many dear friends. She moved back to Madison and worked as the Executive Assistant to Governor Warren Knowles. She then worked for Attorney Byron Ostby. Deciding to follow her creative passion, she then graduated from MATC with a degree in Interior Design, working for a short while at Seybold Flooring before opening her own design studio- Carol's Studio. She had a talent for restoring and decorating old houses and was also a creative painter, cook and stitcher. She was very successful in all her pursuits until an aneurysm followed be a stroke disabled her in 1999.Survivors include cousins: Beth (Delton) Fransen and family, Tom (Mary) Kilpatrick, Ken (Carol) Kilpatrick, Jim (Dawn) Skattum and family, Kristi (Wayne) VanderArk and Mary Lynn (Dennis) Dwyer and family and many other extended family members and friends including; Ann (Bob) Davis and family, Marilyn Graves, Jeanne Marquis, Judy McGettigan, Mary Ellen Pink and Barb Tollakson.Because of a dramatic spike of the COVID-19 virus, a private graveside service will be held at a later date at Apple Grove Lutheran Church, Cemetery in Argyle, WI with Rev. Daniel Bohlman officiating. The Erickson Funeral Home in Argyle is serving the family. My condolences to Carol’s family and friends. I didn’t know Carol, but I knew of her. I lived on the same block as Judy and she babysat for me when I was a baby. I worked at BPHCC ‘90-‘95, before Carol lived there and I’m in regular contact with Henri the retired beautician. I moved to DeForest in 1985 and I see Jon and Judy at church regularly. I know what a good friend you’ve been, Judy, my heartfelt sympathy for the loss of your dear friend. I’m involved with a charity in the Madison area and I will make a donation to Restoring Roots in her memory for all the good she did in her successful creative life. Many of my family are buried at Apple Grove. If not for COVID I might even have come down for the funeral, I don’t think I’ve been in the church since 1972. Rest in heavenly peace, Carol.

I grew close to Carol when I moved to Madison and we became roommates. We kept in contact pretty much up until she had her stroke. After that she did recognize me but it was difficult to see her deterioration from the vibrant woman she was to the woman she became. Rest in peace Carol. .
