Obituary
F.W. "Bill" Hughes, age 95 of rural Darlington, WI passed away Friday, January 1, 2021 at Agrace Hospice Care in Fitchburg, WI. He was born August 3, 1925 in Fayette Township in Lafayette County, WI the son of Frank and Mildred (Larson) Hughes. Bill grew up in Lamont Township where spent most of his childhood and worked as a farm hand and dairy cattle transporter. At age 18, Bill enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where he served in WWII. After being honorably discharged, Bill moved to St. Charles, IL where he worked for 43 years as a machinist for various printing companies. Bill was united in marriage to his best friend, Betty (McGranahan) Geissbuhler in 2005.Bill is survived by wife Betty of Darlington; one son: Larry (Sheryl) Hughes of Marietta, GA; two step-daughters: Diane (Don) Olson and Pam (Jim) Paquette; 9 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren; three brothers: Jerry (Dorothy) Hughes of Belvidere, IL, Dwane (Kay) Hughes of Janesville, WI, and Paul (Mavis) Hughes of Waunakee, WI; and one sister: Jane Nelson of Blanchardville, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife: Lavern Ann (Satterwaite) Hughes; one daughter: Vikki Miller; and four brothers: Sam Hughes, Bob Hughes, Jack Hughes, and Dick Hughes.Bill was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Darlington. Bill enjoyed spending time cooking, baking, fishing, and doing macramé. He adored children, especially his grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan of all kinds but especially enjoyed watching football and the Chicago White Sox baseball team.A private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 5, 2020 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Darlington with Rev. Joji Reddy officiating. Burial will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery where military graveside rites will be accorded by Bates-O'Brien-Howe-Wiegel Roelli American Legion Post #214 of Darlington. A public visitation will be held Monday, January 4, 2021 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church (104 E. Harriet St., Darlington)In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Bill's name.Due to Wisconsin State Mandate, masks are required during your time inside the church and that proper social distancing guidelines are practiced.

I was honored to get to know Bill and Betty while I had my flower shop in Darlington. Such a sweet couple and always had a smile on their face. They so enjoyed my floral arrangements and I enjoyed designing for them. I’m saddened to learn of Bills passing. My thoughts, prayers and love are with Betty and his family. Since I’m not there I’m sending a picture of flowers they would love.

I will always cherish going fishing at Apple Canyon Lake with my uncle Bernie and Bill. Also, how he looked after my sister when they were neighbors. I will miss his friendly hellos and conversations.
