Mary Lindell

Mary Fischer Lindell, Darlington, passed away on April 12th from a stroke that occurred on March 30th, with her loving family by her side. Mary was born the eldest of three children to Webster & Marcella Fischer of Lewiston, MN. Mary was united in marriage with Rodney Lindell on January 18, 1964 after meeting in college on a blind date. She graduated from the University of Minnesota and continued her education at UW-Stout and UW-Platteville. Mary's passion for mixing ingredients and teaching led to a 36-year career with Darlington Community Schools where she shared with students her knowledge of Family & Consumer Sciences (home-ec for the layman). Following her retirement in 2001 she continued her dedication to students by substitute teaching. Mary was a talented seamstress and, because of her dedication to youth, enjoyed judging both clothing and foods at local county fairs. She was active in the Women's Guild at the United Church of Christ, the Darlington Garden Club and the Redbird's Football Booster Club. She loved supporting the Redbirds, Badgers, Brewers and Packers.Her greatest pride were her grandchildren, which she cherished. She loved spending time with them at the park, playing games, coloring, baking, and sewing. All of the grandchildren live in California so Mary and Rod have been vacationing to sunny California during the winter months for the past 20 years. She will be remembered so fondly by those who received a "Note from Mary" which was an encouraging word, congratulations or just a card to let you know she was thinking of you. Many students she educated and mentored remember the first day of school cross word puzzles, her tips for getting a stain out of clothing, how to repair a tear or sew on a button, layout a pattern, or prepare a delightful recipe. Mary is survived by Rodney of 57 years of marriage; daughter Deanna (John) Drum and their three daughters Tiffany, Lauren and Carissa, son Daniel (Katie) and their two sons Jonah and Ben and brother John Fischer (Jan) of Arizona.Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Sara and her brother-in-law, Charles Merrifield.A private Memorial Service will be held at Immanuel United Church of Christ on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at 12:30 PM followed by a public gathering from 2:30 P.M. until 4:30 P.M. at the Church's Fellowship Hall to celebrate Mary's life. A private burial will take place at the Union Grove Cemetery in Darlington. Pastor Brad Brookins will officiate and the Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington is serving the family.In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the City of Darlington Swimming Pool Fund.
