Roger Monson

Roger H. Monson, age 92 of Baraboo, WI formerly of Darlington, WI passed away Monday, January 24, 2022 at his home in Baraboo. He was born February 4, 1930 in Wiota, WI the son of Theodore and Ona (Hanson) Monson. Roger grew up on a farm in Wiota and graduated from Darlington High School. After graduation, Roger and his twin brother Robert and some close friends took a road trip across the United States, halfway through the trip they ran out of cash so they worked in a cotton field in Mississippi to make enough to finish off their trip. Once Roger arrived back home, he enlisted in the United States Army where he earned the rank of Sargent and operated heavy machinery. When he was honorably discharged from the Army, Roger returned home and met the love of his life, Anna Marian Davis and a few years later they were married on August 21, 1956 in Darlington. Roger and Marian raised their family in Darlington while he worked for Lafayette County for many years. He resided in Darlington most of his life until recently moving to Baraboo to be closer to family. Roger is survived by his daughters: Debra Monson of Wonewoc, WI and Brenda (Mike) Johnston of Potosi, WI; his grandchildren: David Yeazle of Appleton, WI, Miriah (Mark) Danz of Baraboo, Nathan Yeazle of La Crosse, WI, Ryan Yeazle of Wonewoc, and Alex (Peter) Yeazle of Hillsboro, WI; 12 great-grandchildren; and his twin brother: Robert (Joanne) Monson of Janesville, WI. He was preceded in death by his wife Marian in 2021; two brothers: Jerry Monson and Donald (Helen) Monson; his sisters: Jean (Jack) Klussendorf, Margie Monson; and June Monson in infancy; and one great-granddaughter: Addalynn in infancy. Roger was a proud member of the Darlington VFW and the Darlington Mini Mart Coffee Club. Roger loved to tinker with and attempt to fix anything that was broken. Roger loved farming, whether it be checking out random farm equipment or raising cattle on his own hobby farm. Every day he would take a cruise to check out farmland and relive stories of his past. Every week Roger would tune into the Grand Ol Opry, RFD farming channel, the Andy Griffith Show, and the local news. In his free-time he enjoyed camping in his RV - traveling out West, especially to Yellowstone National Park or any National Park. He cherished the time he spent with his family - especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren creating memories they will all remember forever. A private family funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at Erickson Funeral Home (508 Main St., Darlington) with Rev. Nick McElrath of First Baptist Church in Darlington officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery where military graveside rites will be accorded by Bates-O'Brien-Howe-Wiegel-Roelli American Legion Post #214 of Darlington.
