Harold Douglas

Harold Lloyd Douglas Sr., age 88 of Darlington, WI passed away Sunday, July 10, 2022, at Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County in Darlington. He was born September 4, 1933, in Darlington the son of Alpha and Hattie (Mayne) Douglas. Harold attended Darlington High School with the class of 1951. He was married to Genevieve (Jo) Maiarote and together they had 2 children: Harold Lloyd, Jr. and Mary Jo. After living briefly in Madison, Wi they moved to Philadelphia, PA and later to Malvern, PA. While living in PA he worked as a computer programmer for Gulf Oil. He moved back to his hometown of Darlington and bought and operated Douglas Tavern from 1977 - 1984. Harold later became a mail carrier for USPS and retired from there in 2000.In 1983, Harold was united in marriage to Barbara Ann (Green) Wiegel in Darlington where together they have resided since.Harold proudly enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951 and served in the Korean War until being honorably discharged in 1954. His job was to do payroll. He was always very patriotic. He served as All-State Commander in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and remained active with Bates-O'Brien-Howe-Wiegel-Roelli American Legion Post #214 of Darlington until his death. He was an instrumental part of the planning and building of the Darlington Area Veterans Memorial. In 2017 Harold was given the opportunity to go on an honor flight to Washington D.C. with his fellow comrades. In 2021 he received the quilt of valor for his faithful years of service.Harold had a passion for draft horses. He enjoyed the challenge of training and caring for the horses he loved so much. He was a proud member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ and served on the church board for many years.Harold is survived by his wife Barbara at home; his children: Harold Lloyd Douglas Jr. of Malvern, PA and Mary Jo (Sue Pound) Douglas of Lewes, DE; his grandchildren: Thomas (Jessica) Douglas of Malvern, Richard (Jenny-Kate Purcell) Douglas of Downingtown, PA, and Maria (Doug) Wilson of West Chester, PA; his great-grandchildren: Rylee and Evelynn Douglas, and Noah Wilson; his step-children: Randy (Cathy Demuth) Wiegel of Shullsburg, WI, Sue (Don) Rees of New Glarus, WI; Cindy (Jeff Kranz) Wiegel of Beaver Dam, WI, Terri (Randy Boss) Wiegel of Monroe, WI, JoAnn (Bruce) Geissbuhler of Darlington, Kathy (Jeff) Sterling of Burlington, WI, Brian "BJ" (Vicki) Wiegel of Darlington, and Kevin (Kathy) Wiegel of Deforest, WI; 27 step-grandchildren; 17 step-great-grandchildren; his siblings: Robert Douglas of Mukwonago, WI, Doris (Ralph) Merriam of Darlington, Donna (Roger) Hoesly of Monroe, Patsy Steiner of Darlington, and Gary Douglas of Darlington; sisters-in-law: Virginia Douglas and Pauline Douglas both of Darlington, Pauline (Jerry) Allendorf of Galena, IL, and Dixie Fox of Meridian, ID; one brother-in-law: Clark (Audrey) Green of Warren, IL; and many nieces nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Richard Douglas, Albert Douglas, and Donald Douglas; two sisters: Shirley Douglas; and Darlene Douglas in infancy; sisters-in-law: Marilyn Douglas and Marge Douglas and one brother-in-law: Delbert Steiner.A funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at 10:00 A.M. at Immanuel United Church of Christ (339 E. Louisa St., Darlington) with Rev. Bill Whitford officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery where military graveside rites will be accorded by Bates-O'Brien-Howe-Wiegel-Roelli American Legion Post #214 of Darlington. A visitation will be held Monday, July 18, 2022, from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Immanuel United Church of Christ 339 E. Louisa St., Darlington) and on Tuesday from 9:00 A.M. until 9:45 A.M. at the church.
