Obituary
Harvey L. Shirley age 73 of New Diggings, WI passed away Thursday, January 19, 2023, at Memorial Hospital of Lafayette Count. He was born, February 21, 1949, at the family home in New Diggings the son of Walter and Mary (McNeal) Shirley. Harvey attended school in New Diggings and Leadmine country schools until 8th grade. Following his schooling he started working at Eagle Picher Mine in New Diggings until he started his career at Swiss Colony in Monroe as a line worker for many years until he found his passion as a lock smith. Harvey worked at the New Diggings, Leadmine and Shullsburg recycling centers for many years keeping the communities clean. Harvey is survived by his siblings: Walter "Gene" Shirley Jr., Marjorie Cherry and Marie Gallagher all of Shullsburg, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter: Hope and three sisters: Mary Alexander, Marion Portman and Margaret Olson. Harvey enjoyed spending time in the great outdoors; hunting, fishing, and searching for morel mushrooms. When he wasn't outdoors, he was perfecting "the art of a deal". A visitation will be held Friday, January 27, 2023, from 5:00PM-7:00PM at the Erickson Funeral Home in Shullsburg (235 N. Judgement St., Shullsburg WI 53586). My husband Doug and I send our condolences in the loss of your dear Harvey. We recall the times we shared at New Diggings Elementary School and visits to our home. Harvey was an entertainer, always amusing those around him whether it was antics at recess, tales of adventure or our favorite: a performance of dog tricks by his trained pet. When it comes to New Diggings folk, the cords of friendship and community that bind us together may be separated by time and distance, but they never disappear. Cherish the memories.
