Obituary

Kirk Gunhus, age 64, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 24, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. Kirk was born on March 25, 1959, to the late Duane and Gelene (Peter) Gunhus in Cresco, Iowa. He graduated from Cresco High School with the Class of 1977. Following high school, Kirk worked in the underground construction field until he was hired at the Iowa Department of Transportation in Decorah, Iowa where he worked until his retirement in 2015. In 2017, Kirk moved to Mineral Point, Wisconsin to be with his fiancé, Virginia (Ginny) Burbach. Shortly after he moved, he began working for ACE Hardware in Darlington, WI. Kirk is survived by his son: Dustin (Michelle) Gunhus and their family in Elkton, MN; his mother Gelene Gunhus of Cresco, IA; his sister: Lori (Linus) Balik of Cresco, IA; his nephew: Austin (Brittney) Balik of Marion, IA; his niece Mandy (Aaron) Blau of Lisbon, IA; five great-nieces and nephews: Adelynn, Olivia, and Carter Balik and Jordan and Hannah Blau. He was proceeded in death by his father: Duane Gunhus in 2009. Kirk enjoyed spending time with his son Dustin, going to Nascar Races, dirt track races and demolition derbies around the area. All of his life, Kirk had an avid love of hunting, trapping and fishing. Services will be held Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at 11:00 AM at First Lutheran Church in Cresco, IA (920 3rd St E, Cresco, IA 52136). A visitation will be held Wednesday, May 3, 2023, from 9:00 AM until 10:45 AM at the church. The Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington is serving the family. Lindstrom Funeral Home is Cresco is handling local services and burial in Iowa.
