Donald Ellis MacNaughton Jr., known affectionately to all as Mac,De or Doc, embarked on his final deployment, leaving the shores of this world on December 26, 2023. Born under the winter's frost of January 24, 1949, in the heart of Shullsburg, Wisconsin, Mac's journey came full circle as he took his last breath in the same beloved hometown. Mac's life was a rich tapestry of service, laughter, and the kind of storytelling that could make even the most stoic veteran crack a smile. A proud graduate of Shullsburg High School, he carried the spirit of his alma mater wherever he went, often reminding folks that you can take the boy out of Shullsburg, but you can never take Shullsburg out of the boy. After high school, Mac answered the call of duty, serving his country with honor in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. His dedication to fellow veterans didn't end with his service; he continued to stand shoulder to shoulder with his brothers and sisters in arms as both a VFW Commander and Vice Commander, ensuring the laughter was as plentiful as the support. Mac was predeceased by his anchor in life, his wife Carol, who no doubt has been waiting with that "you're late" look on her face. Together, they raised two sons, Donald (Brenda at his side) and Adam (partner-in-crime to Amanda), who inherited their father's knack for storytelling and perhaps a few of those inappropriate jokes. Mac was also the proud grandpa to Amelia and Grayden, along with his step-grandson Eddie, who will surely miss his larger-than-life tales and mischievous grin. His mother, Mildred, and brother, Andrew, along with his son, David, and other family members were there to welcome him with open arms to the great beyond, where the stories are endless and the laughter never fades. Mac was always ready to assist VFW and American Legion functions. His passion for helping other veterans extended to ensuring they never missed an appointment, as long as they could tolerate his jokes en route. A true town historian, Mac kept up with all the comings and goings of Shullsburg, often adding his own colorful commentary. His love for conversation was only rivaled by his love for an occasional inappropriate joke, which he delivered with the timing of a seasoned comedian. To say Mac will be missed is an understatement. His absence will be felt in every corner of Shullsburg, in the silence where his laughter once rang out, and in the stories that will be told and retold about the man who could light up a room with a single quip. Mac's legacy is not just in the deeds he accomplished or the service he rendered, but in the joy he spread and the lives he touched. A prayer service will be held Saturday, December 30, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. at Erickson Funeral Home (235 N. Judgement St., Shullsburg). Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Shullsburg where military graveside rites will be accorded by McCann Richards American Legion Post #105 of Shullsburg. A visitation will be held Friday, December 29, 2023, from 3:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Erickson Funeral Home in Shullsburg.
