Obituary

Glenn G. Soper, age 84 of Darlington, WI, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at Lafayette County Hospital in Darlington, WI. He was born February 16, 1940, to Glenn Soper and Pearl (Jacobson) Soper. Glenn attended Reed School in Argyle before graduating from Darlington High School in 1958. He was united in marriage to Barbara (Howe) Soper on October 24, 1959. Their union was blessed with three children: Stephanie, Stuart, and Scott. On June 2, 1979, Glenn married Gayle Dinges and welcomed another son, Mike, into their family. Glenn was an electrician for his uncle, Adolf Blazer, before working in Madison as an electrician for 10 years. In 1979, he began doing farm work for Jim Whalen, followed by driving semi for Harold Elzen. He then became a part-time sheriff's deputy for Lafayette County. In addition to being a sheriff's deputy, he worked as a maintenance person for Citizen's National Bank for 10 years. Glenn played baseball in high school, pitching a no hitter. Guns were his favorite passion, and he was an avid hunter for deer, ducks, and squirrels. Glenn enjoyed hunting on the Mississippi River with his boys, Stuart and Scott, and traveling on hunting trips to North Dakota with his friend, Larry Ziltner. He also enjoyed going on trail rides and rounding up cattle on his horses. Glenn was a member of the Darlington Saddle Club for 40 years, a Mason for 56 years, and a long- time member of the Argyle Rod and Gun Club. Glenn is survived by his wife, Gayle, at home, his children, Stuart (Deana) Soper of Fayette, WI, Scott (Debbie) Soper of Mineral Point, WI, and Mike (Melanie) Dinges of Stoughton, WI, and seven grandchildren: ReAnna (Bob) Parker, Sarah Koeller, Andrew Soper (Sheila Mick), Josh Soper, Natty (Mitchell) White, James and Katie Dinges, and seven great -grandchildren. He is further survived by his siblings Karen (Homer) Troy, Loves Park, IL, and Kristi (Rick) Nelson, Argyle, WI. Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Pearl Soper, one daughter, Stephanie Soper-Hanson, two brothers, Roger Soper and Gene Soper, and mother- in-law, Hope Cutler. A visitation will be held from 12:00 to 3:00 PM on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at the Erickson Funeral Home (508 Main Street) in Darlington, WI. He was a hero to me at one time when I was only about 2 or saving me from drowning - Glenn saved Genes life from a farm elevator accident. He had a watchful eye on his younger siblings. Great pitcher when in school leading to be scouted for Milwaukee Braves & accepted!
