George Hill

George D. Hill, age 70, of Shullsburg, WI, passed away Friday, October 25, 2024, at UW-Hospital in Madison, WI. He was born July 25, 1954, in Beloit, WI, the son of Raymond Sr. and Doris (Dalton) Hill. George was raised in Stockton, IL, where he lived until moving to Shullsburg in 1971 and graduated with the Shullsburg High School class of 1972. He was united in marriage to Joanne Curran on April 28, 1973, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Shullsburg. After their marriage, they moved back to Illinois for several years, living in both Stockton and Warren until moving back to Shullsburg where they raised their family and have resided since. George started his professional years at a young age making cheese in Warren, IL where he worked proudly alongside his father. George held several careers, including insurance sales for Prudential and production manager at Iroquois Foundry in Browntown, WI. He left his job at Iroquois to pursue his dream of owning his own business and started Miner Express, LLC where he ran a logistics company. George and Joanne also ventured into the restaurant business, becoming co-owners of the former Wheel Inn in Shullsburg. George began his retirement in 2018 after retiring from Hormel in Dubuque, IA. George is survived by his wife Joanne; his daughters: Julie (Todd) Lux of Tomball, TX, Michelle (Dan) Wedige of Shullsburg; and Beth (Nora) Hill of Middleton, WI; his grandchildren: William, Reagan, RJ, and Kennedy Lux, Tyler (Emily) Hill, Rayna Wedige, Aylish and Eamon Hill; one great-granddaughter: Braelyn Hill; brothers: David (Audrey) Hill, Ronnie (Joyce) Hill, Randy (Cathy) Hill, and Ricky (Karla) Hill; his sisters: Loretta Bevars, Arnetta (Bob) Beau, Susie (Dave) Reynolds, and Rose (Raymond) McCoy; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Raymond Hill Jr. and Richard Hill, along with many other loving family members. George was a member of the St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Shullsburg and his dedication to community was evident through his active involvement with the Shullsburg Jaycees and his tenure on the Shullsburg City Council, where he worked diligently to improve the lives of his fellow citizens. George's love for the outdoors was unmistakable. He found joy in camping with his family, fishing, and tending to his garden. His passion for playing cards and watching the Green Bay Packers was more than just a pastime; it was an opportunity to bond with friends and family, sharing stories and creating lasting memories. Morning coffee was never just a routine for George; it was a cherished ritual where he connected with his loved ones, discussing everything from the mundane to the meaningful. George's ability to lend a helping hand was legendary within his family. Whether it was cutting down a tree or putting a roof on a family member's house, he was the first to roll up his sleeves and get to work. His generosity knew no bounds, and his presence brought comfort and a sense of security to those he helped. He was, in every sense, the cornerstone of the entire family, providing support and strength to all. His love for lending a helping hand was only eclipsed by the love he had for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. George was a builder of memories, always present for the significant moments in their lives, and even the simple ones that mattered just as much. George's legacy will undoubtedly live on through them all. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church (344 N. Judgement St., Shullsburg) with Fr. Chris Gernetzke officiating. A visitation will be held Monday, November 4, 2024, from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church and on Tuesday from 10:00 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. at the church.
