Kenneth R. Townsend, age 87, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2024, at Bethany Home in Dubuque, IA. Born on June 9, 1936, in Shullsburg, WI, Ken's life was marked by his unwavering love and dedication to his family, and commitment to his community. Ken's childhood in Shullsburg laid a firm foundation for his athletic and academic achievements. At Shullsburg High School, he captained the football, basketball, and baseball teams during his senior year, demonstrating early on his leadership qualities and competitive spirit. His prowess on the baseball field continued at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he took the field as a varsity catcher. Ken balanced his education with his responsibilities as a husband and father, working at the library during the night while attending UW Madison. In 1958, he graduated with a degree in Industrial Management, a testament to his work ethic and perseverance. Ken began his professional career at Borg-Warner Corporation in Rockford, IL, before moving to Dubuque, IA, where he would make a lasting impact at Barnstead/Thermolyne. Over 35 years, he ascended to the role of President, retiring on January 1, 1996. Ken was known for his morning walks through the factory, engaging with employees and taking pride in the innovative products they created together. Throughout his life, Ken's professional and volunteer contributions mirrored the integrity and passion he brought to every endeavor. His career was marked by a strong involvement in the Dubuque business community, serving on the Dubuque Chamber of Commerce and the Dubuque Blood Bank Board. His keen interest in commerce and international trade led him to the US Department of Commerce District Export Council. Ken's leadership skills shone brightly as he chaired the Mercy Health Center Divisional Board and sat on the Board of Directors of the Industry of Scientific Apparatus Manufacturer's Association. He also co-chaired the Loras College 1989 Annual Fund Campaign, showcasing his dedication to education and community growth. Ken spent his life committed to enhancing the lives of those around him. His passion for community work was evident through his longstanding involvement with several local organizations. Ken served on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Dubuque. His guidance and leadership helped shape the club into a beacon of hope and a safe haven for the youth of the city. His vision for a more united and supported community led him to become a Founding Director of the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque. His insight and financial acumen were invaluable as he took on the role of Chairperson of the Investment/Finance Committee. Under his stewardship, the foundation grew in both scope and impact, becoming a cornerstone of charitable giving and community development in the area. Ken's commitment to community enrichment did not stop at the borders of Dubuque. In 2004, he founded the Shullsburg Community Fund, extending his reach and further demonstrating his belief in the power of local initiatives to foster positive change. Beyond his professional achievements, Ken's zest for life was most evident in his love for sports. His infectious enthusiasm for his Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers made him a beloved figure at games, often heard proclaiming, "You're in God's country now," upon entering his home state. He was a constant presence at his children's sporting events, instilling in them the same passion for athletics that he carried throughout his life. Ken is lovingly remembered by his four children: Terry Townsend, of Dubuque; Julie (Larry) Gladson, of Marion, IA; Tim (Colleen) Townsend, of Germantown, WI; and Mark Townsend, of Dubuque. His legacy continues through his eight grandchildren: Taylor, Kimberly, Claire, Marc, Jason, Carly, Michael, and Kyle; and his six great-grandchildren: Jackson, Nora, Caroline, Eleanor, Brooks, and Lucas. He was a beloved brother to Jim (Carol) Townsend of Prescott Valley, AZ, Dick (Donna) Townsend of Moline, IL, Tom (Nerrie) Townsend, of Arlington Heights, IL, Harry (Carol) Townsend, of Ferryville, WI, and Diane (Judd) Jones, of Montgomery, IL. Ken was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bernadine Townsend in 2022 and his sister, Betty (Dave) Thompson, 2016. Ken's legacy is one of love, generosity, and selflessness. His impact on his family, friends, and community will be felt for generations to come. Kenneth R. Townsend's story is one of a life well-lived, filled with the joy of giving and the warmth of a life shared generously with others. He leaves behind a community grateful for his service, a family who revered him, and a lifetime of memories that will continue to inspire all who knew him. Ken's passing is not just a loss but a celebration of a life that was truly a gift to all who had the privilege of knowing him. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, May 31, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church (344 N. Judgement St., Shullsburg) with Fr. Chris Gernetzke officiating. Burial will follow at St. Matthew's Catholic Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, May 30th, 2024, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home (2659 John F Kennedy Rd in Dubuque, IA) and will continue the following day at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Shullsburg from 9:00 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. at which time a Time of Family Remembrance will begin. The compassion and expertise provided by the staff at Bethany Home and Hospice of Dubuque were sources of great comfort to Ken and his loved ones during his final days. A special note of gratitude is also extended to Judd and Diane Jones, whose selfless devotion over the past five and a half months exemplified the true definition of family and support. Their tireless support and care for Ken were acts of pure kindness that the family will never forget.
