Obituary

Donald L. Herman, age 83, of Lancaster, Wisconsin, formerly of Shullsburg, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Orchard Manor in Lancaster. He was born on March 4, 1942, in Darlington, Wisconsin, the son of Earl and Florence (Hicks) Herman.

Donald grew up in rural Darlington and lived a life marked by joy, enthusiasm, and a deep appreciation for the people around him. He lived with an intellectual disability, yet it never defined the warmth of his spirit or the happiness he shared with others. Donald worked for many years at the Hodan Center in Mineral Point, where he took pride in his work and enjoyed being part of the community. He was a resident of M & M Group Home in Platteville for 39 years before moving to Orchard Manor, where he had resided most recently.

Donald was known for his infectious smile, boundless enthusiasm, and unwavering love for the Green Bay Packers. He especially enjoyed attending local festivals and outings, where his excitement and friendliness were always on full display. Donald’s hugs were legendary—big, genuine, and full of love—just like his heart.

He was survived by his cousins: Matt Hicks of Oxford, WI and Mike Hicks of Edgerton, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Erickson Funeral Home, 508 Main Street, Darlington, Wisconsin. Burial will follow at Union Grove Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.ericksonfuneralhome.com.

Don was a special friend for over 50 years. He started coming to Hodan Center in 1974. I remember him gardening at our vegetable plot outside of Mineral Point and helping to sell the produce at our roadside stand. He was so proud of the vegetables and the money he earned. He worked at our Center for many years and enjoyed our Seniors program in his later years. Don had the heartiest laugh and just a gentle soul. Rest in peace, dear friend. Tom and Trici Schraeder

Was so blessed to get to know Donald when he worked at Hodan. Absolutely one of the kindest, most caring individuals I've ever known! Such a special man!
