Obituary

Anna Mae Johnson, age 93, of Oregon, WI, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2026, at UW Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. Born on March 2, 1933, in Madison, WI, she was a devoted homemaker and cherished member of her community.

Anna grew up in rural Calamine, WI and was raised by her beloved grandparents: James and Luella McKillip and attended school in rural Belmont. On April 23, 1952, Anna was united in marriage to Wes Johnson at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Calamine, WI and devoted 43 years of her life to farming alongside her husband Wes in rural Wiota. After retiring from farming, Anna and Wes downsized to a smaller home outside of rural Gratiot, WI, where she continued to share her warmth and humor with family and friends.

A woman of great kindness and a wonderful sense of humor, Anna loved growing beautiful flowers and took great pride in her vibrant flower beds. She delighted in hosting family and friends at their farm during the summer months and treasured Sunday drives with Wes to visit relatives. Anna and Wes took many trips out West and down south enjoying the travels thought out the United States. They especially enjoyed fall trips to northern Wisconsin to appreciate the colorful foliage. Anna was deeply involved in her parish, serving with dedication in St. Joseph’s Altar Society and the Wiota Home Makers and cared lovingly for many children in the Wiota and Gratiot areas.

She is survived by her loving daughter Cindy (Scott Nelson) Crotty-Nelson of Oregon, WI; granddaughter Brooke (Aaron) Elenbaum of North Carolina; many nieces and nephews; sisters: Mavis Czarnezki, Donna Moran; brother-in-law: LaVerne Hying and her cherished grand kitties, Mac, Tinkey, and Little Girl. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wes Johnson in August of 2007; her son-in-law: Dave Crotty; mother: Florence Berg and stepfather Harold Berg; mother and father-in-law: William (Mayme) Johnson; sisters: Luella Hying, Arlene Mary (Bud) Skinner, Larry Berg, and Betty Jean Berg; Brothers-in-law: Vernon (Shirley) Johnson, Bob Moran, Chuck Czarnezki, Ed Heiman and Jerry Mueller.

Anna’s family remembers her as an amazing person whose love, laughter, and joyful spirit blessed all who knew her. “Mom, we were blessed to have you in our lives and home. Thank you for all the love and fun you brought into our lives. We have many precious memories to treasure forever. You are with Dad now, and we will all be together again someday.”

A rosary will be prayed at 9:45 a.m., followed by visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Shullsburg, WI. A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Father Michael Chika officiating. Burial will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Gratiot, WI.
