Obituary

Harold Ernie Ensch, aged 75, of Shullsburg, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at his home on July 1, 2026. Born on January 30, 1951, in Hazel Green, Wisconsin, Harold was the cherished son of Ernest Ensch and Florence Oldenberg Ensch.

Harold grew up on the family farm in Buncombe, Wisconsin, attending the Buncomb School House for his early education. He graduated from Benton High School in 1969 and pursued higher education at the University of Wisconsin Platteville, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. In 1973, Harold and Carolyn Ann Thompson were united in marriage at the Primitive Methodist Church in New Diggings, Wisconsin. The couple initially lived in Chicago and Indiana before settling in Shullsburg in 1979, where they lovingly raised their family.

Throughout his life, Harold was known for his dedication as an owner-operator in the trucking industry. His professional journey was marked by hard work and integrity. In retirement, he continued to serve his community by working with the City of Shullsburg’s water treatment and assisting at the burning grounds. Harold was a man who found joy in simple pleasures: tinkering and fixing odds and ends in his garage, woodworking, enjoying early morning coffee at the gas station with friends, and spending treasured time with his family.

Harold is survived by his daughters: Mary Ensch of Cuba City, Wisconsin, and Michelle (Bill) Meister of Sparks, Nevada; grandchildren, Kristianna and Kylar Meister; and his brother Stanley (Mary Jo) Ensch of Indianapolis, Indiana. He was preceded in death his beloved wife: Carolyn, his parents and one sister who passed away in infancy.

A Celebration of Harold's Life will be held at the The Burg in Shullsburg (134 W. Water Street, Shullsburg, WI) from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday July 9, 2026. A private family service will be held at a later date with burial being held at Shawnee Cemetery in New Diggings. The Erickson Funeral Home in Shullsburg is serving the family.
