Allen Poppy

Allen M. Poppy, age 75, of Shullsburg, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, June 13, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on September 5, 1950, at Hazel Green Hospital the son of Charles and Mona (Peacock)Poppy. He grew up in rural New Diggings on the family farm where he made many fond and lasting memories in his youth. Allen attended Shullsburg High School before continuing his education in Journalism at the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh. He dedicated 30 years of service as a U.S. Mail Carrier with the United States Postal Service, where he became a familiar and trusted presence throughout the Darlington community.

Allen was united in marriage to Mary Ann Edge on November 8, 1974, at Centenary United Methodist Church. Together they shared over 51 years of love, partnership, and devotion.

Allen is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann Poppy of Shullsburg; his children, Pete (Lindsey) Poppy of Platteville, Jill (Brett) Boelk of Shullsburg, and Annie (Pat) Timmerman of Shullsburg; and his cherished grandchildren, Eli, Heath, Grady, and Hudson Poppy, Brianna, Charlie, and Alex Boelk, and Peyton, Kara, and Kallie Timmerman. He is also survived by his sisters, Susan McCoy, Ruth (Chet) Melcher, Lois Martinson, and Connie (Don) Eckelbarger, his in-laws: Bob (Barb) Edge, Ken Edge, Rich (Cindy) Edge, Susie White, Patti (Tom) Black along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Ronald “Doc” (Mag) Poppy and Jerry Poppy; his sister, Ann Katherine (Dick) Scott, parents-in-law Lyle and Genevieve Edge, and brothers-in-law John White and John "Jack" McCoy.

Allen found his greatest joy in his role as grandpa. Whether attending events, lending a helping hand, or serving as the official cab driver for his grandchildren, Allen embraced his title with a smile and unwavering dedication.

Known for his quiet demeanor and kind heart, Allen never sought the spotlight, but his steady presence left a lasting impression on those who knew him. He was an enthusiastic sports fan who faithfully followed the Cincinnati Reds and was very seldom seen without his Cincinnati Reds cap on.  He could often be found cheering on the Shullsburg Miners and Platteville Hillmen. He enjoyed landscaping and took pride in caring for his yard, but nothing meant more to him than spending time with his family and supporting his children and grandchildren in all their endeavors.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Erickson Funeral Home in Shullsburg. A private family service will be held following the visitation on Saturday, June 20, 2026.  Burial will be in Shawnee Cemetery in rural New Diggings.
