Lawrence D. "Larry" Wedig, age 77, of rural Darlington, Wisconsin, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 12, 2026, at UW Hospital in Madison, WI. Born on January 3, 1949, in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, Larry was the son of Delvin Primus Wedig and Mary Eileen (Kilkelly) Wedig. He grew up in the Truman area and graduated from Darlington High School in 1967. Following graduation, he worked at Storcks Tire Service in Darlington until being drafted into the United States Army in October of 1968. Larry proudly served his country as a Sergeant with the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. His courage and dedication earned him numerous military honors. For his actions in combat, he was awarded a Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal with Valor Device and one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. His service was further recognized with the Vietnam Service Medal with two overseas bars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and Expert Marksmanship badges for the M-14, M-16, and M-60.". He was honorably discharged in May of 1970. Years after the war her made sure to keep in touch with his band of brothers at the bi-annual 101st Airborne reunion. Drive on!
On November 14, 1970, Larry married Gerri Lee Pratt at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Darlington. Together they built a life rooted in hard work, family, and the land they called home. Over the years, Larry farmed and quietly built a legacy through determination and unwavering work ethic.
Larry's greatest source of pride was always his family. He took immense satisfaction in watching his children build lives of their own and found tremendous joy in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. Whether attending sporting events, school programs, concerts, or other activities, Larry made every effort to be there, offering his unwavering support from the sidelines. He never missed an opportunity to celebrate their successes, big or small, and his children and grandchildren always knew how proud he was of them.
In his free time, he was an avid hunter and collector of Guns, Coins and clocks to name a few. He never missed a good deal was always ready for the next auction.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Gerri; his children, Matthew (Peg) Wedig of Oconomowoc, Scott (Dana) Wedig of rural Darlington, Angela (Cory) Mosley of Browntown, and Blake (Elena) Wedig of rural Darlington; and his grandchildren: Zachery, Nicholas and Trey Wedig, Taylor, Madyson, Kaycee, Addie and Jayde Wedig, Riley, Aiden and Leah Mosley,Krew, Kolbie, Rhodes, and Banks Wedig. He is also survived by his brothers, Ronald (Geraldine) Wedig of Platteville, Bernard Wedig of Middleton, and Mark (Colleen) Wedig of West Des Moines, Iowa; and his sisters, Joyce Thomas of Darlington and Mary Kay Foley of Mineral Point. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Joan Sporle; a close uncle: Donald Wedig Sr., brothers-in-law, Richard Foley and Don "Junior" Sporle; sister-in-law: Connie Wedig; niece, Jennifer Sporle; nephews, William "Billy" Thomas and Michael Thomas; and nephews, Gerard Thomas, Christopher Sporle and Brandon Wedig.
Larry's life was marked by service, perseverance, and humility. He leaves behind a legacy built not on words, but on hard work, sacrifice, and devotion to his family. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church (104 E. Harriet St., Darlington) with Fr. William Vernon officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery. A visitation will be held Tuesday, June 16, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church and on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the Church.
