Obituary
Robert “LeRoy” Metcalf, 95, of Madison, WI (formerly of Shullsburg, WI), passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Oak Park Place in Madison.
LeRoy was born on April 4, 1930, at his family home in New Diggings Township, Lafayette County, to Charles and Sarah “Sadie” (Burke) Metcalf. A proud graduate and Valedictorian of Shullsburg High School in 1948, LeRoy dedicated his life to hard work, family, and community. He spent his entire career devoted to the family farm, working the land he loved well into his 70s.
LeRoy was a lifelong member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, where his deep faith and generosity left a lasting mark. He was a true humanitarian whose quiet contributions enriched the Shullsburg community, particularly through his support of St. Matthew’s Church and the Shullsburg Fund. He never lost sight of his roots and carried a deep pride in being from Shullsburg throughout his life.
Beyond his dedication to farming and community, LeRoy had a passion for travel and the outdoors. He found joy on the golf course, behind the wheel of his motor home exploring the American West and Southwest, and on journeys abroad to Europe, New Zealand, Iceland, and Alaska.
He is survived by his step-son's: Jon Summers and Rob Summers; one step daughter: Teri Summers-Minette; a special friend, Patricia Ray; and many loving nieces and nephews. LeRoy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Phyllis Metcalf, in 2010; his parents; two brothers, John and Charles Metcalf; and his sister, Elizabeth “Ellen” Russell.

Grandpa LeRoy taught me so much about life / from love of travel to kindness to all to how to properly cut a deck of cards! His grandkids and great grandkids will continue to his legacy through the years - though I tell my kiddo, his great granddaughter, she may not continue the tradition of heaping spoonfuls of sugar on cereal. 😂
