Obituary

Russell L. Swanson, age 80, of Argyle, WI, passed away Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Monroe, WI.

He was born on December 16, 1945, in Monroe, WI, the son of Lyle and Lilly (Olson) Swanson. Russell graduated from South Wayne High School and continued his education at the University of Maryland and later the Colorado School of Trades, where he honed the technical skills that would shape his life’s work.

In 1964, Russell proudly enlisted in the United States Navy. He served his country with dedication for eight years, until his honorable discharge in 1972. His time in the Navy instilled in him a deep sense of discipline, precision, and respect for craftsmanship—values that followed him throughout his life. Russell remained deeply proud of his military service and maintained strong ties to fellow veterans through his involvement with the American Legion.

On July 12, 1975, Russell was united in marriage to Susan Mueller at the Darlington United Methodist Church. He later married Jane Kittoe on June 18, 1994, at East Wiota Lutheran Church.

Following his service and career as an engineer, Russell pursued his lifelong passion for firearms and craftsmanship by opening his own business as a gunsmith. This work was far more than an occupation—it was a calling. Known for his skill, attention to detail, and willingness to share his knowledge, Russell earned the respect and friendship of customers and fellow enthusiasts from near and far. His workbench was a place of pride, patience, and conversation, and through his craft he built lasting connections with many people.

Russell was a faithful member of Wiota Lutheran Church, a charter and very proud member of the Yellowstone Flint and Cap Club, a past president and lifetime member of the Colorado Rifle and Pistol Club, and a member of the Bates-O’Brien-Howe-Wiegel-Roelli American Legion Post #214 of Darlington. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, muzzle loading, and especially cherished attending his grandchildren’s activities.

Russell is survived by his wife, Jane, at home; his children: Dawn (Brett) Wickline, Larina Swanson-Carter, Stephanie Swanson, Krystal (Zachary) Youngren, Zachariah Swanson, his step-children: Jeff (Kathy) Trewartha, Toni (David) Izzard, Chris (Tom) McCall, Jamie (Tiffany) Trewartha, Eric (Brenda) Trewartha; 24 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and many friends he met throughout the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, Orlo and Cora Swanson and Ervin and Agnes Olson; and his parents-in-law, James (Essie) Kittoe and three sisters in infancy.

A memorial service will be held Friday, January 23, 2026, at 1:00 P.M. at Wiota Lutheran Church (6672 State Rd 78, South Wayne), with Rev. Clayton Faulkner officiating. A visitation will be Friday from 11:30 A.M. until 12:45 P.M. at the church.  Burial with Military Honors will be held at a later date.

The Erickson Funeral Home of Argyle is serving the family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.ericksonfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made out to Yellowstone Flint and Cap Club.

What I remember most most about Russ was his calm and caring nature, his kindness, his empathy in the way he treated everyone. Up don’t run across to many humans like Russ in a lifetime! To say that he will be missed is an understatement. I will always remember him as the benevolent soul he was❤️. To Jane and all the family, we are just a little better having known Russ. Condolences to you all
