Josephine Coulthard

Josephine Belle "Josie" Coulthard, age 86 passed away Monday, September 5, 2016 at home surrounded by her loving family. Josie Cavanaugh was born on March 19, 1930, daughter of Thomas and Catherine (Carey) Cavanaugh in Seymour Township, WI. She graduated from Shullsburg High School in 1947. Josie married Cletus John Herbst on June 27, 1949 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Shullsburg, WI. Josie and Cletus had nine children together; Rick (Peggy) Herbst, Kathy Lewis, Gary (Kris) Herbst, Joan Brandt, Jean (Allen) King, Donnie Herbst, Ronnie (Vicki) Herbst, Joseph Herbst, and Teri (Greg) Brennan. Josie was devoted to raising her children and caring for her family. She also worked at multiple restaurants in the Shullsburg area, as well as at the Senior Citizens Center, where she met Martin Coulthard who would become her second husband. Josie and Martin were married on April 27, 1985 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church. With this marriage she acquired seven more children: Lynn (Roger) Olson, Jan Hancock, Donna (Dave) Brown, Joyce Coulthard, Sherry (Ron) Woodworth, Roger (Kathy) Coulthard, and Michelle (Ron) Stauffer. Josie was very proud of her "15 kids", 35 grandchildren and 62 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children; and two sisters: Brigid Ubersox and Frances Hagen.Josie was preceded in death by infant son Joseph, husbands Cletus Herbst and Martin Coulthard, parents Thomas and Catherine, infant siblings Thomas and Therese and sister Mary Kay Wachter. Josie's days were filled with many delights. She enjoyed baking and cooking and never wanted the family to leave hungry. Her signature items were homemade cinnamon rolls, chocolate chip cookies, homemade pizza and pasty. She loved to spend her spare time gardening and playing cards. Nothing made Josie happier than her occasional days at the boat—where she usually won. Although she loved many sports, she was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and was looking forward to a World Series win in the near future. She will always be remembered by her family and friends for her warm contagious laughter, bright smile, and loving hugs.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church (344 N. Judgement Street, Shullsburg) with Rev. Sudhakar Devarapu officiating. Burial will be in St. Matthew's Cemetery. A visitation will be held Wednesday, September 7, 2016 from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Erickson Funeral Home (235 N. Judgement Street, Shullsburg) where a Rosary will be prayed at 3:30 P.M. and on Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church.
