Obituary
Edward J. Chatt, age 89, of rural Argyle, WI, passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at UW-Hospital in Madison, WI. He was born December 20, 1927, in Cicero, IL, the son of Joseph and Mary (Jilka) Chatt. Ed graduated from Morton East High School in 1946. He grew up in Berwyn, IL. After graduating high school, on April 8, 1946, Ed enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Sheridan, IL and achieved the rank of technician - 5th grade in demolitions. He received the WWII Victory Medal and was honorably discharged on October 2, 1947 in Fort Lawton, Washington. Upon his return from the Army he attended Morton Jr. College and later graduated from the University of Illinois - Champaign. He began his career as a salesperson for Steel Sales Corporation in Chicago, IL. Soon after, he started his business with his brother-in-law where he co-owned and operated Tolerance Grinding Company in Chicago. In 1977 he sold his portion of the business to begin dairy farming near Dodgeville, WI. In 1979 he purchased the Sears Direct Merchant Store in Dodgeville and later worked for Lands' End until his retirement. He then moved to Mauston, WI, and lived on Castle Rock Lake. In 2008 he built a home in rural Argyle on his daughter and son-in-law's farm where he has remained since. Ed is survived by two daughters: Susan (Jim) Coffer of Nolensville, TN, and Patricia (Carl) James of rural Argyle; ten grandchildren: Garrett, Abi, and Katy Coffer; Sadie (Chris) Harris; Danielle (Dana) Maricque; Will (Meghan) James; Christopher, Cody, Hannah, and Stephanie James; and three great-grandchildren: JJ and Isabel Maricque and Gracie Harris. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one great-grandson: Brian Harris in infancy. Ed was a proud member of American Legion Post #2930 of Portage, WI. He was an avid reader and spent a lot of time at the Monroe Public Library. His family will always remember him for his love of camping, fishing, and his knowledge and advice when it came to investing. Ed was a great supporter of his grandchildren's sports, music, and theater endeavors. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends. A Celebration of Ed's life will be held at a later date. The Erickson Funeral Home in Argyle is serving the family. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.ericksonfuneralhome.com. We love you, Grandpa! You were always so invested in our lives, and an amazing pen pal. You taught us so much, and your sense of humor and curiosity to learn new things were inspirational. We miss you and can't wait to see you again on day. Love, Sadie, Chris, and Gracie

Grandpa Chatt bought us the kids book "If You Made a Million", which was the first influential book I read, and continued to buy us investment books and send articles, especially anything about his investment hero Warren Buffet. And he'd always be willing to be "talked into" playing board games with us. My first vehicle, the Plymouth Voyager with the amazing turn radius, was his old van. Lots of good memories. He'll be missed.

I'm really going to miss you Ed. You were a friend, a pal, a travel buddy, and a great father-in-law. Thank you for trusting me with your daughter. I was a scruffy-looking motorcycle-riding factory-working college student living in a van, and you welcomed me into your family and always treated me with the highest respect. I'll always appreciate that. I loved our many adventures together and can not think back on any of them without it putting a smile on my face! The photo below was from our trip to Huntsville AL where we saw Abi playing with the symphony, and you absolutely loved the Werner von Braun exhibit at the Space and Rocket Center. And you let me tease you about the older volunteer gal there that absolutely adored you! And especially thank you for being such a terrific grandfather to our children. Love you Ed, Jim

Thank you for being such a fun and caring grandpa! I'll always cherish the memories of the winters you came and stayed with us, watching Cheers and drinking root beer floats together almost every night. I won't forget your appreciation of learning, from your stories of sneaking into the teacher's library to read about wrestling techniques in high school to you taking us to Grandparents University and "majoring" in engineering or nutrition together. Thank you for always joining your grandkids in our shenanigans, including getting into the Leap Day spirit and wearing the holiday colors - blue and yellow! We love you, Grandpa!
