Virgil Skattum

Virgil L. Skattum, age 95 passed away the early morning of December 30, 2017, at Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County in Darlington, WI. He was born the second child of John L and Sendy (Hanson) Skattum on September 14, 1922 in Lamont Township. He farmed with his parents and worked as a trucker until he was united in marriage to Hannah Glatz on March 8, 1945 in the parsonage of Blanchardville Lutheran Church. They farmed on various farms until they purchased a farm on East Lamont Road in 1953. In 1997, they retired to his present home.Virgil is survived by three children: David Skattum of Madison, Wisconsin, Dick (Shelby) Skattum of Argyle, Wisconsin, and Ruth (Greg) Stamm of Argyle, Wisconsin; four grandchildren: Matt (Tacara) Stamm, Travis (Danica) Skattum, Cody (Heather) Stamm, and Anna (John) Hartman; seven great grandchildren Zoe Ripp, Gunner Stamm, Gauge Stamm, Spencer Skattum, Gavin Skattum, Rylee Stamm, and baby Abigail Hartman; Sister- in- law: Helen Brunkow; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife: Hannah on December 29, 2002, parents, one brother: Galey Skattum; one sister: Shirley Smith; and two brothers -in-law: Francis Smith and Bill Brunkow.Virgil was a life long member of Apple Grove Lutheran Church. He served on the church council for several terms. Virgil also was an Argyle Township Supervisor and later held the position of Chairman of the Township Board. In addition, he served on the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors. He also served on the Argyle Meat Processing plant board until its closing. He was a kind gentle man that had a friendly greeting for everyone he met. He had a wealth of knowledge of local history and shared it with anyone willing to listen. Virgil loved farming and taking care of the land and animals. He enjoyed helping at the Chalet Campground especially mowing which he did until he was 90 years old. At his 90th birthday party he took his first motorcycle ride and stated "I don't think I'll be buying one anytime soon."A funeral service will be held Friday January 5, 2018 11:00 a.m. at Apple Grove Lutheran Church (14501 Apple Grove Church Road) with Rev. Daniel Bohlman officiating. Burial will be in Apple Grove Church Cemetery. A visitation will be held prior to the funeral service from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Apple Grove Lutheran Church (14501 Apple Grove Church Road).
