Mary Jo Mottley, age 88 of Darlington, WI passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County in Darlington. She was born May 31, 1929 in Bismarck, ND the daughter of Chester and Catherine (O'Neil) Martin. Mary Jo graduated from Darlington High school as class valedictorian in 1947 and later graduated from Madison Business College. She was united in marriage to Francis H. "Chub" Mottley on September 17, 1949 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Darlington. Mary Jo lived in Darlington from the age of 13. She was a legal secretary early in her career and later performed title searches for abstract companies. Mary Jo is survived by five children: Kathleen (Rick) Hempel of Madison, WI, Kristy (Mike) Hutchens of Lakeland, FL, Mary Pat (Bob) Vosberg of Platteville, WI, Theresa (Garon) Reinke of Madison, and Terry (Connie) Mottley of Park Ridge, IL; her ten grandchildren: Ryan (Miha) Hutchens, Michelle (Matt) Dayton, Troy (Jessica) Hutchens, Patricia (Henry) Ring, Rachel (Aaron) Marjala, Brian Reinke, Sarah (Ethan) Parr, Elise Mottley, Kevin Reinke, and Luke Mottley; 7 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Tom (Mary) Martin of Madison, WI and Jim (Patty) Martin of Darlington; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one sister, Helen Boyle.Mary Jo loved spending time with her children and grandchildren as well as the families of her brothers and her deceased sister. She lived for the next big family gathering.From first grade, Mary Jo was an avid reader, and later in life her Kindle was always close at hand. She was happiest when reading a great book, playing a competitive game of bridge or euchre, or engaged in interesting conversation—especially if it focused on her beloved Darlington. She especially appreciated the talented performers in the various local theater groups there, and attended almost every musical ever produced in Darlington. Mary Jo was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Darlington and its CCW. She was a founding member of a bridge group that played together for over 50 years, and the friendships that grew out of her bridge and euchre groups were extremely important to her.A Time of Family Remembrance will be held Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 11:40 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 P.M. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church (104 E. Harriet Street, Darlington) with Rev. Joji Reddy officiating. Burial will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery. A visitation will be held Friday, February 2, 2018 from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Erickson Funeral Home (508 Park Place, Darlington). A visitation will also be held Saturday from 11:00 A.M. until 11:40 A.M. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.ericksonfuneralhome.com. For those who prefer, a memorial fund has been established in Mary Jo's name.

I had become wonderful friends with this DEAR GRACIOUS LADY and I will miss her so much. Every time I play bridge, I think of her tactfully given advice to we novices and how she enjoyed that game with her friends... and of course the wine and chocolates. Reading at Sienna Crest was always a special treat when Mary Jo was there. She was an avid reader and was a leader in our book club discussions. We shared stories about our children and I loved hearing stories about my dear friend, Kristy and her siblings. She enjoyed life and her devoted children cared about and for her beyond imagination. Our deepest sympathy to the Mottley family! Mary Jo was wonderful, gracious, caring in every way. My memories go back to our childhood when we had get-togethers. Your mom was a wonderful friend to both our moms Pauline Olson and Leah Barnard. We always enjoyed visiting with her whenever we saw her. She is now in heaven renewing her friendships. My deepest sympathy to all of Mary Jo's beautiful family. I have special memories of staying overnight at the Mottley house and was always so welcomed by Mary Jo even though she was busy with all the duties of a very special Mom to all of you. I heard your Mom was quite the bridge player which is such a wonderful way to get together with friends as I know she had many. She will be welcomed in heaven with your Dad, who I just adored as well as he was our bus driver for years. My hugs and love go out to all of you as you celebrate this very special person, Mom Mottley.

Will miss you Aunt Mary Jo and the times you let us soend the night. I'm sure you are all up there playing cards like I always remember growing up. My thoughts are with all my cousins and are in my prayers. Love to you all.

Another of my mom's original bridge group is now gone. I loved when they came because we'd have a great dessert for supper. Beautiful lady was Mary Jo. Always pleasant and happy to see me and visit at Holy Rosary or the beauty shop if I was with Florence. Sincere sympathy to all those children she was so proud of. No regrets, you were the best kids right to her very last breath. God Bless and comfort you all.
