Irene K. Gille, age 96 of rural Gratiot, WI passed away Thursday, April 11, 2019 at Lafayette Manor in Darlington, WI. She was born July 7, 1922 in Gratiot the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Korn) Gille. Irene graduated from Gratiot High School in Gratiot and later from Platteville Normal School where she received a teaching degree. She taught 40 years in the Shullsburg School District in Shullsburg, WI (20 years in rural schools and 20 years in town). Irene lived on the Gille Family Farm her entire life. Irene was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Gratiot and a proud member of the Teachers Association. She enjoyed reading, word puzzles, taking small trips, playing cards with her many friends, and going to numerous dinners and plays at the Fireside Theater in Fort Atkinson, WI. Irene lived a full life, full of positivity, and making sure every moment counted. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends. Irene was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister: Gladys (Joe) Edge.A Time of Family Remembrances by Rev. Glenn Andes will be held Monday, April 15, 2019 at 10:45 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church (5685 Main St., Gratiot) with Rev. Sudhakar Devarapu officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Gratiot. A visitation will be held Monday, April 15, 2019 from 9:00 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. at the church. The Erickson Funeral Home in Shullsburg is serving the family. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.ericksonfuneralhome.com. For those who prefer, a memorial fund has been established in Irene's name. The family would like to give a special thank-you to Dr. Martin Cleary, Rev. Glenn Andes, and the nurses and staff at Lafayette Manor for their care and compassion for Irene.

I remember Irene, Gladys, and Joe coming to the Roost when I worked there years ago. It was always a pleasure visiting with them. Such nice people, it's so sad they're gone.

Irene was such a great lady. She taught school at Center Hill Country School. She was the sweetest lady and such a nice teacher. She loved going to Bingo on Friday Nights in Warren. My sister and I started going and low and behold she came to us and had remembered our names! I couldn’t believe it! Irene dear you were one of a kind and will truly be missed by many many friends and family. R.I.P Lovely

Such a sweet, spry, intelligent, and glamerous lady. When I think of her it brings to mind the Gratiot breakfast/dinner clutch with my parents (Don and Clare), her sparkly rings, and my son having the same July 7th birthday on which she remembered him many times. Good memories for many people. May she rest in peace.

Irene taught at Vickers School, a rural one-room school in the Belmont School District, starting when I was in 3rd grade in the fall of 1963. I was the only one in my grade through the 7th grade, and went to the grade school in town for 8th grade. She taught a few more years at Vickers, until the rural schools were closed and all went into town. I believe that's when she began to teach in Shullsburg. She was good at challenging us, and had something to teach each pupil regardless of grade or standing. I still wonder how she could keep us all straight in our various subjects. I visited her in the Manor on her birthday last year, and she was still sharp and vivacious--still teaching us how to enjoy life. God's blessing on her and her family.

Irene was a wonderful and caring person, We enjoyed having coffee and breakfast with her in Gratiot at the Nixon House it used to be. On one of her birthdays Gary gave her a ride on our Spider around Gratiot. She surely will be missed
