Doris Simmons-Cary

Doris Simmons-Cary, age 100 of Darlington, WI passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at Lafayette Manor in Darlington. She was born on April 8, 1919, in Wildcat, the daughter of Edward and Susie Schwartz. She was a lifelong resident of the Darlington area. Doris graduated from Darlington High School in 1937. On October 9, 1937, she married Claude "Hop" Simmons. He preceded her in death on July 12, 1978. On October 1, 1981, Doris married Orville Cary. He preceded her in death on January 29, 1995.Doris is survived by her three children, Bill (Pat) Simmons of Janesville, WI, Sue (Don) Thom of Beaver Dam, WI, and Chuck (Marlene) Simmons of Prairie du Chien, WI; eight grandchildren, Mark (Jean) Simmons, Teresa (Eric) Rhodes, and Steve (Kim) Simmons all of Janesville, WI, Sara (Marc Hanes)Thom of Maplewood, NJ, and David Thom of Portage, WI, Emily (Brian) Joachim of Omro, WI, Ben (Dana) Simmons of Janesville, and Brian (Katie) Simmons of Eastman, WI; and 20 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by one brother: Kenneth (Evelyn) Schwartz of Dundee, IL. In addition, she leaves behind many nieces and nephews who always knew her as Aunt Doey. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husbands, a brother, Walter Schwartz and his wife, Clara; and her five sisters, Eunice and her husband Roy Parsons, Nellie and her husband Leo Sauer, Eva and her husband Russell Simmons, Mary Nelson, and her twin sister Dorothy and her husband Floyd McCurdy. Doris worked for 19 years for WDHIC (DHIA) as a milk tester until retiring in 1981. Her life revolved around her family and friends. She loved to play cards, travel, visit with family and friends, read, and in her later years she was a whiz at word find puzzles and bingo. She was a member of Darlington United Methodist Church, the Patient Circle, and the Senior Center from the early 1980's until she went to live at Lafayette Manor. She made Lafayette Manor her home for the past 12 years. A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. at Darlington United Methodist Church (546 Main St., Darlington) with Rev. Angela Utter officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery. A visitation will be held Saturday, March 7, 2020 from 9:00 A.M. until 9:45 A.M. at the church. The Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington is serving the family.
