Social Security Benefits
Our helpful resource ensures benefits are handled accurately for prompt payments
Notify
When a loved one passes away, it is important to notify the Social Security Administration (SSA) promptly. Our compassionate team will handle the necessary paperwork and inform the SSA on your behalf. It's essential to be aware of the potential benefits you may be eligible for during this difficult time.
Benefits
In general, monthly survivor benefits are available to eligible surviving spouses who are at least 60 years old (or 50 years old if disabled) at the time of death. The payment amount varies based on age and is typically a percentage, ranging from 71.5% to 100% of the total benefit the deceased person was entitled to receive. If the surviving spouse is caring for a child of the deceased who is under 16 years old or disabled, the age requirement is waived, and the payment is set at 75% of the eligible benefit amount.
Additional Benefits
The following groups may also qualify for survivor benefits:
Minor and Disabled Children: Children under 18 years old (or up to 19 years and 2 months if still in high school full time) or with a disability that began before turning 22 may be eligible. This includes grandchildren and stepchildren. All children must be unmarried, and the payment amount will be 75% of the deceased person's benefit.
Parents: Parents aged 62 or older who were financially dependent on a child who passed away may be eligible for survivor benefits. The payment amount is 82.5% for a single parent and 75% for two parents, based on the deceased person's benefit.
Ex-Spouses: An ex-spouse may qualify for survivor benefits if the marriage lasted 10 years or more.
Lump-sum death payment
A one-time lump-sum death payment of $255 is available to a surviving spouse if they were living with the deceased person at the time of death. If the surviving spouse was living apart but receiving benefits on the deceased person's SSA record for the month of death, they may still be eligible. If there is no surviving spouse, a surviving child may receive the payment if they are eligible for benefits in the month of death.
